This website is one result and achievement of a work package of the project "Conservation of Biodiversity and Natural Resources and Climate Protection by Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry at Cyamudongo Forest" in Rwanda (Cyamudongo-Project) - A project of the Rwanda-Center and Office for Africa-Cooperation of the University Koblenz-Landau (Germany) and its partners: The Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA), the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the University of Rwanda and the Integrated Polytechnic Regional College (IPRC) of Kitabi.
The project is funded and supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) based on a decision of the German Bundestag. The inventory of trees, shrubs and flowering plants of the Arboretum of Ruhande and its presentation on this website is the first complete botanical inventory of the arboretum. In total, 566 species from 106 families were found between October 2019 and December 2020. Please enjoy and discover the plant diversity of one of the oldest and largest arboretums of Africa.
The Arboretum of Ruhande is located at Ruhande Hill in Butare in Rwanda. It is managed by the Rwanda Forest Authority (RFA). The area of about 200 hectares is a longstanding scientific reasearch area and a valuable spot for biodiversity investigations: More than 400 plantation plots allow the exploration of exotic and indigenous tree species.
The arboretum is also home to other plant species like Oeceoclades saundersiana. Of course various animal species are living there, too. Whether student, scientist or other visitor - all who are interested find their place of knowledge or recreational activities here.
